Joseph Hinshaw was born in Indianapolis in the early 1950s. His stories and visions are born through the times of his childhood and early years for these stories. It was a time of science, racism, discovery and hope. After surviving cancer and several other health issues what was left was hope and the time to filter his earlier days into these stories. In 2001, shortly after the attack on the Twin Towers Joe went to England to work with a business contact there. He met David Codling who was an accomplished artist and musician. They met up at the Leeds airport and Joe stayed in their home for two weeks. The business was out of the way in a few days and a trip to Holland was scheduled for David to play guitar in a band for an art gallery show opening. The trip was a success and a lifelong friendship was born.
Ellie Moore is a Yorkshire artist, making paintings and sculptures from palm-sized to wall-sized. Having graduated from Lancaster University with a First in Fine Art and Creative Writing, she works and exhibits in the north of England and specializes in acrylic, miniature paintings. This is her first illustration project, and it has been a privilege to continue the work of the remarkable artist, David Codling, whom she was lucky to have known and talked art with. Through their local gallery, she has been able to frame some of his original works, hear him play his guitar live, learn restoration techniques from him, and even paint the portrait of this most extraordinary sitter. It was a pleasure working with David's wife, Rosie, to complete the remaining illustrations in this book. Using David's folder of copious sketches, references and notes, and with guidance from Rosie, she has attempted to emulate his immaculate draughtsman ship, composition, and flair for colour and detail. It has been a pleasurable challenge, and she hopes to have done justice to David's work in completing the illustrations in this book.
David has many talents. He received his NDD (National Diploma of Design) from Leeds College of Art in 1963 with a painting specialty. He was a graduate of the Royal Academy of Art in London. He received his RASC (Royal Academy Schools Certificate) in 1966. While at the academy he won a bronze medal for painting and various drawing prizes. He was the first to be awarded a full scholarship to the prestigious school. David is a member of PRS (Performing Rights Society). In addition to his art David had played in a band of renown in the 70s and 80s in England named "Quintessence". He took on the persona of Maha Dev for their performances. This band performed and many of the mainstream music festivals in England and Europe. They also performed a Royal Albert Hall. He currently performs in a band in a San Francisco band called "Made in Japan". This had performed a movie soundtrack for a cult horror film that is currently being resurrected to the theaters. David, with his old band mates, is currently writing and producing music for other possible movie scores and at least one upcoming album. David had the shared vision of what these stories should look like. Together and with the help of David's wife Rosie the work began. Each illustration is a unique watercolor painting in this book and hopefully more to come. Sadly as the book was coming to completion David was diagnosed with five brain tumors. He completed the drawings for the book as planned but did not get his brush dipped to complete them. In his last days he turned to another artist and friend and asked that if he was to be taken before he could complete his work would she finish his work. She agreed and finished the last of the drawings to complete the work for this book. Her name is Ellie Moore and her work was astoundingly exact in David's style.
