n this Lecture, the author introduces his audiences to an accessible and challenging summary of Baptist engagement with Judaism. Baptists are committed to the serious reading and application of the Scriptures, but is this undertaken with careful attention to hermeneutics such that an unconscious bias against God’s chosen people does not pervade the resultant preaching and interfaith dialogue? Robert explores the historical journey that Baptists have made regarding Judaism and outlines the spectrum of views that exists, particularly alerting us to supersessionism, or replacement theology, which is often the subtle undercurrent to any unreflected interaction. He ends with practical suggestions of ways in which we can be both engaged and informed. Throughout the Lecture, we are aware of the author’s deep commitment to his own Baptist and Christian convictions alongside his desire for constructive dialogue with modern Jewish believers. It cannot fail to call us to a serious reassessment of how we preach, evangelise, and live alongside others.
