Set in late 60's Seattle, A River Running Backward tells the story of Tony Lloyd, a fourteen year old boy who goes in search of a new family after being chased into the streets at the point of his step-father's shotgun. In this coming of age story, he meets Bev, a street-wise runaway, who adopts him into her "street family," Frankie, "the man who lives under the Market," who introduces him to the underworld, and Annie Brown, a no-nonsense New England girl, who becomes his saving grace. After accepting a job from Frankie, stealing his property, then losing it, Tony tries to survive long enough to make it right, evoking the reality of life on the streets; a tale of love, loss, revenge, and redemption, where Tony finds his place.
