Synopsis

In these lectures we are mainly interested in specific formalisms applied to various atomic and subatomic systems. We first consider the Liouville space formalism with operators replacing state vectors and superoperators replacing operators. One of its applications in non-linear atomic spectroscopy is presented. We then move to Dirac’s theory in its four-dimensional formulation, with time and space coordinates treated at equal level, the whole compensated by a particular metric. Using then propagator theory, we treat electron-electron scattering, electron self-energy and vacuum polarization. Finally we stress the fact that the Pauli matrices are the source of more general symmetry transformations like Lorentz boost and Gell-Mann quark symmetries.
