It is a nation of peoples, based upon an ancient faith, blessed with rich culture and tradition. It is not a nation of borders, for these have been denied the Nation of Israel in the time Bernard Drachman penned these tales. The author, a second-generation American Jew, was born in New York at the beginning of the Civil War and died at the ending of the Second World War. His simple tales, however, have little to do with war. Conflict, even with prejudice and hatred, plays a role in some of the narrative, but these are stories of joy, of common laborers, shopkeepers, learned scholars, sharing that rich culture and tradition with others of their faith in many lands.
