China built the world's first governed AI ecosystem. Its models, approvals, compliance checks, procurement channels, and consumer deployment operate as one machine.
From Lab to Life explains how that machine works. Western coverage of Chinese AI swings between alarm and dismissal: China is either racing ahead or copying what others built. Both miss the operating system underneath. In China, algorithm registries, pre-launch approvals, content controls, and security reviews determine which AI products reach users and on what timeline.
The book traces China's AI ecosystem from early commercial deployment to global diffusion. It traces the foundations of Chinese AI, the governance architecture built around it, the engineering adaptations forced by constraints, the launch of consumer services, and the spread of Chinese models and regulatory frameworks into Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Baidu serves as a recurring thread, from search-era recommendation systems to Ernie Bot's approval in the first batch of consumer generative AI services on August 31, 2023.
Grounded in Chinese-language regulatory texts, corporate filings, and technical documentation, From Lab to Life gives decision-makers a practical guide to China's AI operating model: the architecture that determines which AI products ship, scale, and cross borders.
