Marjorie Agosín is the Pura Belpré Award–winning author of I Lived on Butterfly Hill and The Maps of Memory. Raised in Chile, her family moved to the United States to escape the horrors of the Pinochet takeover of their country. She has received the Letras de Oro Prize for her poetry, and her writings about—and humanitarian work for—women in Chile have been the focus of feature articles in The New York Times, The Christian Science Monitor, and Ms. magazine. She has also won the Latino Literature Prize for her poetry. She is a Spanish professor at Wellesley College.

Una visita inesperada

Me despierto de un tranquilo reposo al sonido distante de una campana que parece viajar en el viento. Hoy no es domingo, así que no son las campanas habituales de la iglesia de Santo Tomás en el cerro Concepción, que queda al lado del cerro Mariposa donde siempre las oigo. El sonido dulce y encantador va y viene. Salgo de mi habitación para investigar este ruido y veo que mamá y papá ya están despiertos. Están mirando por la ventana, con tazas de café en sus manos. Ellos también han escuchado este ruido que no nos es familiar, pero lo único que vemos son los dos pájaros de siempre que suelen sentarse en el poste telefónico conversando con su acostumbrado “pío, pío”.

Bajo corriendo por las escaleras chirriantes de nuestra casa, llena de determinación para encontrar la fuente de aquel ruido misterioso. Cuando abro la puerta azul de nuestra casa descubro… una mula pequeñita en la escalera de entrada. ¡Una mula! Parece estar tan polvorienta como si acabara de salir de un armario de antigüedades. Lleva un collar con tres campanitas, las que creaban el sonido delicado que había oído hace poco. Cada vez que la mulita se mueve, la cola también se agita y la cabeza produce el tintineo de las campanitas, un ruidito mágico e inolvidable.

El pobrecito animal parece perdido y temeroso. Cuando le acaricio el pelaje, nubes que parecen contener cenizas se destellan en el aire. —Está bien pequeña. Está bien —murmullo intentando tranquilizar al animalito.

La nana Delfina sale muy afanada de la casa llevando en una mano un cubo de agua y un poco de jabón que huele a lavanda y en la otra, una esponja. ¿Cómo sabía ella que había llegado esta visita inesperada? La nana Delfina, mi abuela postiza, nuestra ama de llaves, y una de mis mejores amigas, y además confidente, tiene la habilidad insólita de saber las cosas antes de que ocurran. Por eso la consideramos un poco hechicera… una brujita buena.

—Nana sabía de nuestra visita. El viento me lo contó en un sueño —dice con una sonrisa curiosa, hablando de sí misma en tercera persona como suele hacerlo—. Nana no permite que los espíritus malos entren flotando en la casa y en las cenizas que lleva la mulita. —Además de hechicera es supersticiosa.

Mamá y papá salen de la casa para ayudarnos. Mientras lavamos a la mula vemos que ella —papá, quien es doctor, ha declarado que es hembra— tiene el pelaje marrón y plateado igual que el color del café con leche espumosa que me tomo todas las mañanas. La mulita me mira con sus ojos marrones enormes. Mi corazón se derrite.
