The Book of Enoch was accepted and loved by Christians during the first three centuries of the church. Its impact on the New Testament and Christian beliefs was profound. It was called scripture by Christ and was obviously considered such by His disciples, the apostles, and the early church fathers. Scholars agree on it's importance. “There is little doubt that 1 Enoch was influential in molding New Testament doctrines concerning the nature of the Messiah, the son of Man, the messianic kingdom, demonology, the future, resurrection, final judgement, the whole eschatological theatre, and symbolism. No wonder, therefore, that the book was highly regarded by many of the earliest apostolic and Church fathers.” E. Isaac. "The influence of 1 Enoch on the New Testament has been greater than that of all the other apocryphal and pseudepigraphal books taken together." R. H. Charles.
This new edition is the first true “Study Bible” type text of the Book of Enoch. It seeks to include information relevant to a general reader up to a scholar specializing in 1 Enoch. This highly accurate engaging text (First Century Version) of 1 Enoch, was painstakingly derived in its entirety from primary sources, as translated by elite scholars in the field and is the most up to date text available. Scholars referenced include: Charles, Milik, Heiser, Charlesworth, Isaac, Black, Wise, Cook, Nickelsburg, VanderKam, Olson, Boccaccini, Wright, Stuckenbruck, Tiller, Sacchi, Flint and many others. The 2267 footnotes include alternate readings, commentary, and relevant scholarly quotes. The approximately 5000 external cross references supply links to the Old Testament, New Testament, Apocrypha, Dead Sea Scrolls, second temple literature, first and second century AD Jewish writings, Josephus, Christian Church fathers and rabbinic texts. Thousands of internal cross references are also included. Each section is introduced with author, date, and other information particular to that book. Numerous breakout articles are included. The appendix includes the most extensive subject and scripture indexes ever developed for the Book of Enoch. Footnotes are on page bottoms in the print version and in the back for Kindle.
The standard 1912 Charles Edition of 1 Enoch is obsolete due to the discovery and publication of the Aramaic Dead Sea Scrolls fragments in 1976, and the Chester Beatty Greek Papyri (AD 4th century) of chapters 97-107 discovered in 1930. In addition, scores of Ethiopic texts have been discovered since 1912, and over a century of scholarship investigating 1 Enoch has occurred. These discoveries have been incorporated into this text and footnotes.
The goal is neither to promote nor “debunk” The Book of Enoch (1 Enoch) but simply let it speak for itself. This volume will correct both the inflated beliefs and unfair criticisms many make of The Book of Enoch. You will understand it as written, in all its insights, surprises and complexities. The goal of this edition is for readers to understand this important text that continues to shape our world through its widespread but mostly unrecognized influence.
Jesus and his disciples were very familiar with this text, and it was foundational to their world view. With 1 Enoch you are not reading anything that Jews and Christians of the first century were not reading, and in most cases, regarded as scripture. George Nickelsburg calls 1 Enoch “arguably the most important Jewish text of the Greco-Roman period.”
To understand what Jesus Christ taught, and who He claimed to be, you need to understand The Book of Enoch. “
This edition is a must for interested persons, students, teachers, pastors, and scholars. Rather than just reading the Book of Enoch, this volume will quickly bring you to an advanced level of understanding. This is a one-of-a-kind resource for the study of the non-canonical book Jesus called scripture!
