What does it mean to be called? How does one discern his or her calling? There has been much discussion about these topics within the church, and perhaps much confusion as well. Importantly, rooting our understanding of vocation and calling in God’s mission gives space for new emphases within the conversations related to faith and work, including theologically and contextually grounded emphases on creativity, vocational freedom, and vocational discernment, along with innovative educational models which can support believers as they navigate their work as participants in God's mission. When believers connect their gifts, talents, and creativity with God's work in and for the world in a way that is contextually relevant, it opens up opportunities for transformative witness for both believers and for the organizations they serve.

À propos des auteurs

Eric Robinson holds a PhD in intercultural studies from Columbia International University and a master's in Christian education from Union Presbyterian Seminary. He is the author of numerous journal articles related to mission theology, including its important connection to calling and vocation. Additionally, he is a career K-12 educator. Eric is married to his wonderful wife, Letarshia. He enjoys spending time with his family, running, photography, and playing the guitar.



Edward L. Smither is professor of intercultural studies and history of global Christianity and dean of the College of Intercultural Studies at Columbia International University. His previous books include Christian Mission: A Concise Global History and Mission in the Early Church: Themes and Reflections.
