There is an underground war raging across America that many never see.
On one side, there are those building, like the Ku Klux Klan before them, an ‘invisible empire’ that would overthrow democracy. Concealing their identities not with white hoods but with usernames and avatars, they work at your local police department, teach at your local school, preach from behind the church pulpit, and cast votes at city hall.
On the other side are everyday Americans determined to drag this new invisible empire from its ‘hidden realm’. Americans who have lost faith in the institutions meant to protect them, compelled to step outside the confines of the law – committing acts of violence, sabotage, and espionage – to destroy an enemy they believe will ultimately destroy us all.

Christopher Mathias is a journalist covering the far right. Previously a senior reporter at HuffPost, he’s done work for MSNBC, Zeteo, and WNYC. His reporting chronicled the rapid radicalization of the GOP, and has helped unmask white supremacist cops, soldiers, teachers, and politicians. Mathias was a Deadline Awards finalist for feature writing. He lives in New York and goes by @LetsGoMathias on BlueSky and X.
