I attended the Naval Academy from 1967 to 1971, during the height of the Vietnam War. It was a brutal time to be a midshipman – at least for many of my classmates. The experience prompted me to think long and hard and eventually to write about the experience – especially about the life of a plebe, where the concepts of duty, honor, and loyalty are drummed into the psyche.Annapolis left a lasting impression on me and many of my classmates. In 1971, while I was a Junior Officer on a Navy Destroyer, I deployed to Vietnam. Although my stint in country was brief, and my single combat experience, though terrifying, was fleeting, I was fortunate to have gained the experience, and it was there I realized how being a plebe helped me prepare for the possibility of my demise..I came away from Annapolis with the conviction that being a plebe, while a messy, unfortunate business, was essential for the continuation of a strong Academy and a strong nation.Later, when I became a self-proclaimed writer, I decided to create a story centered around Plebe Year and thus I created the “Plebe Trilogy” that has been popular at the Academy.
