“Anyone intending a similar passage either in whole or part would do well to read and carry this book on board.” Cruising – the magazine of the UK Cruising Association.

“Ballard and his crew come across as practical, down to earth sailors and by the end of the book I felt like they were my friends.” Marsali Taylor, Practical Boat Owner.

Have you always wanted to sail the oceans but have been constrained by your everyday life and lack of time? To the Caribbean and Back” describes how one man charted his way through these difficulties to fulfil his sailing dream.

The author’s ambition was to sail the world’s oceans in his own boat, but with work and family commitments he never believed he could make it happen. His wife, Tania, suffers badly from motion sickness so a live-aboard life for the two of them would never be a possibility. But when he was planning to retire Tania encouraged him to fulfil at least part of his dream and to sail across the Atlantic to cruise the eastern Caribbean islands before sailing home via Bermuda and the Azores.

“To the Caribbean and Back” recounts how Tania helped Richard to turn a dream into reality. It describes dealing with compromises, planning the voyage and working around the constraints of crew availability and life at home. It tells the story of adventures at sea and time in the sun – an Atlantic circuit involving compromise, travel logistics and hope over common sense, but always with not much time to spare!
