Synopsis

* Translated from 19th Century Music Notation to Modern Music Notation * Annotated for clarity *Including the Reveille, Troop, Retreat, Officer's Calls, Signals, Salutes, and the whole of the Camp duty as practiced at Head quarters, Washington City, intended particularly for the United States Army and Navy. Originally written by Charles Stewart Ashworth, leader of the Marine band of music Washington City. To which are added Tunes for the Fife, adapted to the Drum. Originally published in Boston for the author by G. Graupner in 1812. The original publication featured nearly readable fife parts, but almost entirely illegible drum notation that has left modern drummers (those who are used to 20th or 21st century notation style) scratching their heads for decades. This translation is entirely new, drawing on sources from such notable drum manual authors as Samuel Potter, Gardner Strube, and George Bruce to decipher the rhythms that Ashworth may have intended, yet remains true to Ashworth's original sticking and accenting. A seminal work of American Ancient Drumming, Ashworth was the first author to use the word "Rudiments" in relation to short, educational drum patterns and his version of the Camp Duty was extremely influential to rudimental drummers from the War of 1812 up through the 1933 publication of the Standard 26 American Drum Rudiments. This classic manual is not to be neglected for the serious rudimental drummer!
