Backwards Crosswords
Welcome to this fun book of backwards crosswords (also known as backwords crosswords or black out crosswords), where you’ll need to solve the crosswords back-to-front: we’ve already filled the grid with letters but you’ll need to work out the structure of the grid.
The rules are simple: shade in some squares in the grid in order to form a symmetrical crossword grid. You must do so in such a way that all the crossword clues can be answered in both an across and down direction.
To stop the puzzle being too easy, the clues aren’t listed in order. For instance, the first clue ‘Former pupils’ in the across direction on puzzle one has the answer ‘alumni’, so you must find ‘alumni’ going across somewhere in the grid (but it may not correspond to 1 Across), and shade in at least one letter directly after it. You can then shade in the symmetrical partner of that square.
Keep going until you have created a valid, symmetrical crossword grid and have identified the answer to every across and down clue in the grid. Once done, you’ll have completed the backwards crossword puzzle. If you need some help, the answers are at the back of the book. Good luck!
