Synopsis

It is now 1864, the fourth year of the American Civil War. The Union presence was growing as more and more Confederate forces were drawn to the east. There had not been a significant battle on Texas soil, yet. The war generated opportunities for the cattle and horse markets. It was Griffith Bowman and the men at Standing Elk Ranch who intended to supply the growing needs, regardless of which Army the Buyer was on. But the war also created hardships. The wounded boys returned to Texas only to find a lack of jobs, or upon the fact they were so severely disabled, they could not be accepted for a position with the vast ranches. It was difficult for a one-legged cowboy to sit a horse. Some turned outlaws and saw the situation as 'easy pickings' with the vanishing lawmen leaving off for war. Stage lines and banks were favorite targets yielding large rewards and little risk with a clean escape long before any law could be notified to give chase. It would be a perilous time for Griffith Bowman and the men of Standing Elk Ranch.
