Henryville is a small, deep red, rural town in Tennessee, named after the old antebellum Henry family. The last scion of the Henry family, Mark Henry, is Yale-educated, arrogant, and offensive. He lectures, irritates, and inflames everybody with his radical views and contempt for their backwardness. Somebody murders him in the run-down trailer he rents from a black man, Chester Henry, whose family is almost as old. Many townspeople might have been motivated to do it. Chief of police Angus Gothern, who has taken the job as easy retirement, has no experience investigating murders. But the 13 year-old daughter of Mark Henry's girlfriend shows surprising initiative and imagination. She leads Angus through the process of analyzing the murder and identifying the murderer with a trick that turns violent as the 2016 election results come in.
