Synopsis
Centuries after a plague collapsed civilization, survivors rebuild. What they eventually create is a medieval society where former states have become independent kingdoms, collectively called the Americus. In the year 3000, the largest and most powerful of these kingdoms is Missoura.
Into this Realm comes Jack, a lost boy saved from the battlefield by the King of Louis, home of the great Silver Arch. Put into school with his adoptive brother and sister, Jack grows up to become a physician - only to accompany his pregnant sister, Cristianna, when she elopes with rugged Prince Rodrick of the Illini. But giving birth to twin princes, while initially sealing a treaty between kingdoms, starts the long downfall of the Kingdom of Chicageaux.
As the twin princes grow up in New Cago at the Court of Chicageaux, Jack sees the animosity forming between them. He tries to advise them, feeling like more than an uncle to them. When the princes reach adulthood, King Rodrick divides the Realm into separate provinces ruled by each prince. Jack stays to serve the "good" Prince Nicholas - but is he truly more noble than the "evil" Prince Darius?
Grave insult by one prince against the other incites vengeful warfare between them. The violent outcome of medieval battles and the siege of Cinnati brings destruction not only to the Realm but causes the destruction of the Royal family. Jack witnesses it all as Royal physician: the warfare, the Court schemes, the family drama - and throughout the years secrets remain hidden. And the darkest secret of all Jack vows never to reveal because doing so risks his execution.
