Inspired by the revolutionary spirit of Sun Yat-sen and financed with three gold coins from his mother, J. K. Choy leaves his humble Hawaiian home in 1911 and heads to China. Quickly gaining a reputation as an astute problem solver, he rises rapidly to top government posts. By the 1930s, he’s living comfortably in a servant-staffed house in Shanghai. But the Japanese invasion in 1937 changes life forever, bringing family separation, refuge in an opium den, and a narrow escape in disguise. Eventually disillusioned with Chinese politics, Choy—basically penniless—heads for the U.S., where he reinvents himself as a successful American banker and community advocate. His influence continues to this day.
