The latter half of the 1950's was a time of deep turmoil, especially for the black people in the Southern states, isolated and alone in their struggle for equality, a struggle that was both dangerous and seemingly hopeless, played out to a deafening silence by the rest of a country only now beginning to adapt to television. Playing a leading role in the struggle were Southern black churches, their pastors and their congregations who placed themselves in the teeth of the policeman's dogs, his water hoses, whose heads received the beatings from the policeman's billy-club.. It was they who refused, in the face of almost certain failure, to quit. This play, idealized and romanticized, follows one such church and its congregation for the twenty-four period preceding their very first protest march.
