The 1960’s were a time of turmoil. The sex, drugs and rock and roll culture was blossoming and things were changing. However, in most homes, the 1940 and 50’s morals still reigned. When Mrs. Cartwright found out that her daughter was pregnant; she threw her out of the house. No second thoughts, no questions asked, it was what she did. This left Emily Cartwright, seventeen, pregnant and homeless. Determined to keep her baby, how is she to survive? In the 1960’s, a pregnant teen’s options are few. Go to a home for unwed mothers, have the baby and give it up for adoption or try to survive on the street. Her innocence makes her vulnerable, but she quickly learns life’s lessons. Emily is a fighter and persists in her journey forward. Her life changes when she meets the feisty, street wise, Trixie MacGregor. Together Emily and Trixie try to make a life for themselves despite many challenges and the basic necessities of food and shelter become their priority. How they accomplish this is sometimes comical and sometimes tragic. Emily’s brother Will wants to help, but has troubles of his own. Life on the street is very difficult for our two young women. Ordeal or Adventure gives the reader a good perspective of life in the changing times of the 1960’s.
