William H. Crook was a common sight in the corridors of the White House in the second half of the nineteenth century.

For over fifty years he served a total of twelve presidents in a variety of roles.

His book Through Five Administrations: Reminiscences of Colonel William H. Crook, Body-Guard to President Lincoln uncovers the first twenty years of his life in the corridors of power.

Crook’s career began in 1865 when he was assigned as a White House guard in January 1865. Unfortunately, he was not on duty when President Lincoln was assassinated in Ford’s Theater on April 14, 1865, and so could do nothing to prevent this tragic event.

Yet, despite this, Crook continued to work as bodyguard for Lincoln’s successor, Andrew Johnson, before being appointed “Executive Clerk of the President of the United States” by Ulysses S. Grant in 1870 and dispersing agent in1877, a role that he would hold for the rest of his career.

Crook’s memoirs provide vivid insight into life in the White House through the administrations of Lincoln, Johnson, Grant, Hayes, Garfield, and Arthur. It provides particularly vivid insight into lives of presidents Lincoln, Johnson and Grant and their families who Crook grew to know well.

After he had completed his fiftieth year of service in the White House, Woodrow Wilson and members of the White House Staff celebrated his career and presented him with a cane. Through Five Administrations: Reminiscences of Colonel William H. Crook, Body-Guard to President Lincoln was first published in 1910 after being edited by Margarita Spalding Gerry. Crook passed away in 1915 and Gerry passed away in 1939.
