Synopsis

Vallabha Kings ruled North Malabar of India before Brits established its East India Company. Their kingdom was known as Kolathiris or Kolathiriri-Swaroopam indicating Koalathu- Nadu their domain in which only a portion still retains the historical name today and that is Koalathu-vayal. Kunhimangalam is another hamlet not far off. Kshatriya-Nambiar and Nair communities dominated the region. Royal army men dominated these communities. There is an ancestral home named Katankot there. The Nambiar’s’ of Katangot were known for their valor and courage. Four centuries ago Chieftain Chindan Nambiar from Pazhaya Veettill Tarwad from Puralimala married Unicheriya of Katangot Tarwad. Unicheriyamma had only male children and a situation had come that the Katangot family would be left with no female heirs which the tradition demanded. Finally, Goddess Veera Chamundi, their family deity answered their prayer. They named her Kunhi-Maakkam. It was a large joint family. Eleven surviving brothers and their wives competed to show their affection to Maakkam. Maakkam grew up. Learned martial art. She made a vow that she would marry only a bridegroom who could defeat her in a solo silambam fight. It made matters complicated. Her parents too didn’t live long. The enormous clout and wealth passed on to Maakkam made ten of her sisters-in-law jealousies. Was Maakkam able to face the challenge? Could she adhere to her vow? Did she succeed in her fight and get a husband of her choice? Were her parents lucky to see Maakkam becoming a mother? How did the Katangot family grow further? Who managed the divine legacy?
