Synopsis

Cathalbui macGhiolla Ghunna (1690-1735) was a Gaelic poet who lived in the area around Lough Macnean, Fermanagh Ireland. His most famous surviving poem - An Bonnan Bui - The Yellow Bittern - can be found on Youtube. It is a wry lament for a dead bird and maybe for a dying culture too. Nowadays it can be for a dying environment because the bittern along wiht the curlew, corncrake, pheasant, woodcock and hare are gone from the area too. An annual hedge school* is held in his memory and the poetry competition is part of that. the competition is advertised on facebook, Poetry Ireland website and elsewhere.*In the 17th and 18th centuries the authorities in their wisdom suppressed education for catholics and other non conformists (Presbyterians). People though education so vital that they set up hedge schools.
