This study is an attempt to present Philby and Angleton primarily in their roles as secret intelligence professionals, as, perhaps, two of the pre-eminent members of that guild. On the other hand, they had personal lives: parents, friends, spouses, children, and in Philby’s case, an alternate career, that of foreign correspondent. Both had remarkable fathers, Angleton’s a self-made man in the mythologized manner of the American frontier, Philby’s an important member, then critic of, the colonial service of the Raj. These matters also will be described insofar as they are relevant. James Angleton and Kim Philby were friends for six years, or so Angleton thought. They were then enemies for the rest of their lives. Both agreed on that. This is the story of their intertwined careers and the effect of those careers on the Cold War.
