This work is a piece of desk-based research which starts by examining four aspects: definitions of personality, personality assessment, changes in personality and continual professional development. Using this information, it seeks to demonstrate that there can be effective ways in which personality assessment can be used to encourage professional development. The research focuses on the education workforce mainly, however, the findings could be applied to other sectors. The research sets out an initial theoretical model and framework for utilising personality assessment as a basis for discussions around personal and professional development in order to enhance teaching skills in the classroom. It is intended that this model could be used to form the initial methodology for action research. This action research would seek to further demonstrate the effectiveness of utilising personality assessment in coaching and mentoring sessions to allow an individual to forge their own pathway of holistic self-improvement and development of their personality. The methodology developed attempts a multi-phasic, mixed-methods approach to maximise reliability and replicability of results. This work discusses ethical considerations and ways of ensuring validity of the data collected to maximise the potential effectiveness of the coaching sessions.
