This action research project utilised a robust mixed-methods, multi-phasic methodology to examine whether the use of personality assessment could be effectively implemented in order to facilitate discussions around personal and professional development leading to self-development planning. The research project used the NEO-PI-3 assessment as a tool for initiating discussion and an intervention process to trial ideas for a personal development framework. This document outlines the five stages of the methodology and the developments to methodological approaches following a pilot study and focus group. It discusses validity and replicability of results in the field of psychology and implements an integrated repeat study as part of the project. The research was undertaken within the field of education in South Wales, utilising both primary school and secondary school settings. The research finds that almost all participants found the process adopted useful, helpful and effective no matter their personality type. This was further demonstrated by consistent findings in the study’s retest. Finally, the research’s dissemination material charts out ideas for a theoretical framework for implementing personality assessment linked to personal and professional development within an organisation.
