Synopsis

This is a series of two inter-connected research projects and dissemination materials that aim to validate the hypothesis that personality assessment can be effectively used in personal and professional development planning. The work sets out research literature analysis of personality theory, continual professional development, causes for personality change, personality assessment and measurement as well as the advantages and disadvantages of assessing personality. It does this before establishing a robust and rigorous multi-phasic, mixed-methods research design utilising both objective self-reporting techniques and projective testing techniques. Action research was split into three segments, the ‘Pilot Study’, ‘Main Study’ and ‘Repeat Study’. A total of 53 individuals participated in the ‘Main Study’ derived from a variety of schools in South-East Wales in addition to 5 representatives of Welsh Regional Educational Consortia. The ‘Repeat Study’ was a randomised retest utilising 16 individuals, each from a different school. The research utilised the NEO-PI-3 assessment as the basis for assessing personality before implementing a programme of personal development planning. The study utilised vignettes as a triangulation method. Quantitative and qualitative data was collected in relation to the processes employed; participants were asked about their satisfaction with regards to the usefulness and helpfulness of the programme of intervention. Action research demonstrated that personality assessment reporting and a programme of intervention can be used effectively to enhance school-based staff’s personal and professional development. This has been measured by participant’s first-hand responses post-intervention and an analysis of satisfaction rates. The retest demonstrated that the intervention processes are widely applicable within the field of education. No correlation was discovered linking individual’s personality type to the success of the intervention. The need for a comprehensive framework to implement the processes was evident and, thus, the ‘Applied Personality Development Framework’ was constructed and built on the results of the action research as a facilitation and mentoring model to implement the study’s findings.
