Synopsis
Some of the most endearing love stories are generations in the making. Some of the most wrenching heartaches happen in slow motion.On Sunday, April 30, 1972, a solitary female figure is on a fateful a trek in the early morning hours in a college town in California. That same day, a young mother is preparing to make a similarly momentous trek halfway around the world in Quang Tri Province in Vietnam. Spanning three generations and two continents, their separate treks lead to love and despair, joy and disappointment, enlightenment and tragedy, but ultimately to a singular bittersweet denouement.Tien Mai Phan has been working as a “hooch maid” at the local military base in Quang Tri Province in South Vietnam. On Sunday, April 30, 1972, she is preparing to leave Quang Tri Province with her family, including her ten-month old daughter, ahead of an anticipated invasion by North Vietnamese forces. That same day, on the other side of the world, Allison Mireles is walking solo in the stillness of pre-dawn Claremont, California – with difficulty. She is in active labor, trying to walk to the nearest hospital. She does not make it. Her child is born under a tree near train tracks not quite halfway to the hospital. Both women are desperate, but for different reasons. Though they have never met and have nothing in common, what happens to them over the next twenty-four hours will shape the lives of two generations to come. In the process, decades old mysteries are revealed, and atonement, or at least some measure of atonement, transpires. In a forty year span there will be redemption and rejection, as well as poignant first loves and wrenching sorrow, and every emotion in between, all while piecing together a tapestry of life with threads leading back to the events of Sunday, April 30, 1972 – and two desperate women.
