The work is a story that questions the notion of a woman's "proper education", prefiguring and foreshadowing Jane Austen's work to show that there is no clear answer to the problem of woman's emancipation and education, the work simultaneously examines the dual barrier of religious and late 18th century moral standards, as the protagonist Miss Milner falls in love with a Catholic priest.
