Excerpt from the Foreword by Padma Shri Manoj Das (Multiple award-winning author). The poet’s (Padma Shri Haldhar Nag’s) flow is irresistible and the metaphors he uses reveal a picturesque imaginativeness. Shri Surendra Nath has undertaken a formidable challenge to present Shri Nag’s creations in English. His strenuous effort to see that the poet’s flair and forte survive the mutation can be comprehended from the footnotes. Undoubtedly, he deserves our congratulations for having done a service to literature by presenting to a wider readership a minstrel and a bard. What I felt from reading the English rendering of one of his relatively long poems with an epic touch such as “The Great Sati Urmila”, he is blessed with that rare gift of wideness of vision. I refer to the poet’s projection of Queen Kaikeyi’s action in causing Prince Rama’s exile. Shri Nag shows that Kaikeyi’s terrible deed was meant to ensure Rama’s safety from a prophetic doom.A discerning reader or listener can feel the spirit of such recreations.
