Synopsis

It was the outer city of Los Angeles, not far from the railroad to the north, the harbor main to the west, and the Pacific Ocean to the south. Tony Geiger grew up in the neighborhood where he worked as a police detective.Children that came from there used to buy homes there as adults like their parents. They did so to live closer to their parents. The tall-strapping man was one of those children, now with thinning dark hair. The main shopping places that were up West 6 Street were mostly small shops. There were several women’s and men’s clothing shops, a café, a bakery, a cleaner’s business, a food market, and a meat market conducting business along there. * * *Holmes could see that the marriage was on the rocks from early in the honeymoon. He thought that perhaps her affair with Gary Lloyd was already underway by then. He asked her. “So, you were having an affair with Gary Lloyd before you were married to Sonny Dobbs?”“It was meant to be one last fling.”“Well, I should warn Laura about last flings.”“It was a horrible mistake.”“Yes, you were about to marry this connected guy that destroyed the lives of estrange-husband and you.”“Yes, should I try to explain why I stayed with Gary?”“Don’t right now. Do you know why Gary Lloyd only does work for the mob?”“A pardon me?”“Yes, he did.”“I knew that Sonny did some gambling with him.”“Gary work for the mob in Sonny’s place until it ended with that explosion.”“I didn’t know that.”“Mrs. Dobbs, sure you knew that.”“Detective, am I under arrest?”“No.”“Listen, I lost out on both of those men. Do I have to keep my thoughts going back over my life with them?”“Oh yes, I’m making you relive it all. Sonny was killed in that second explosion. Gary and his buddies are wanted on prior warrant elsewhere out of state.”“They’re both gone from my life. I suppose you’re arresting me for something?”Just after he left Mrs. Dobbs, a tugboat was getting ready to haul a barge full of cargo north on the Los Angeles River toward the river inlet to the Pacific Ocean Pacific Ocean. Captain Josh routinely carried cargo on his tugboat. That day was no different. He explains to the dock master. "We’re picking up a barge with a large amount of cargo. We’re taking it north of here.”The tugboat began pulling the barge full of cargo late in the afternoon. It was moving south off the western riverbank. The tugboat captain expected to pass on that inlet area within the hour. The tugboat crew was rattled by the barge not moving at all. A seaman yelled to captain. "Josh, what happened?""Damn! Hang on crew!" Captain Josh yelled back.“We’re being pulled ashore toward the riverbank!” a seaman yelled.“The barge snagged on something.”Captain Josh’s tugboat was overpowered as it stopped pulling forward. The tugboat engine was gunned however it was completely stopped by the barge. He yelled at the crew. “Stop the engines!” they stopped with the tugboat drifting into the barge.“Skipper, we hit the barge, and it stopped us!” a seaman yelled."Damn!" Captain Josh yelled back to him.“The barge is still stuck, sir!”"Let’s jump on the barge and inspect it!" Captain Jose yelled. The captain and a seaman jumped on it. He saw that the barge was stuck on a car windshield, and the car stuck on large rocks near that inlet area. They saw that there had been a car wreck that ended with it on those rocks in the river. All hopes of any rescues were clearly long lost. They call emergency anyway. A rescue crew came to the scene before the police arrived. They reported that there were no survivors with only a small amount of investigation. A diver crew reached the car underwater. They retrieved a single male deceased victim. His drove into the Los Angeles River while was drunk. The dead man’s body that they removed was that of Tony Geiger.
