Synopsis

Stan Paregien planned this book with these ideas in mind: (1) It should be written in a lively, easy-to-read style; (2) It should be an invaluable reference tool for full-time residents of Manatee County, Florida; (3) It should be an interesting and useful book for visitors to Manatee County; and (4) it should point out the good and the not-so-good points of living here. When it comes to an almanac-type history of Manatee County, Florida there is nothing that even comes close to this book in terms of readability, comprehensiveness or usefulness. You’ll find a list of the highpoints of local history dating back to 1513. You’ll find information about our beautiful beaches, our politicians and community leaders, and our our school system run by the Manatee County School Board. And you’ll find biographical sketches of the high and mighty as well as of those of ordinary folks with great servant hearts and little desire for publicity. You’ll find all of that a much, much more. This paperback has 383 pages containing 430 photos, some 500 biographical sketches and 148,384 words. Those numbers represent more than three years of work which Paregien put into this project. This book has been printed in full-color, meaning that any color graphics or photographs have been reproduced in color. In order to do that, a more expensive grade of paper had to be used. All of that added to the expense of producing this book. Therefore, the price we have to charge is higher than we would have liked. We could have elected publish this book in black-and-white on far cheaper paper. However, we collected hundreds of wonderful full-color photos and graphics. We just could not print this historic book in bland B&W. Thank you for understanding . . . and for buying this much more beautiful book.
