Dharma (as named in Ancient World), which may be broadly conceived as a cosmic law underlying right behaviour and social order has been converted gradually to different religions. One unique feature of the earliest religion guided by Dharma was that no ceremonial inclusion like baptization was needed for belongingness. That idea prevails still now (except some sects). But misuses of Dharma by some opportunists initiated disagreements among the believers. New doctrines had evolved and took shapes of new religion. New religious guidelines were set along with not only inclusion process but also exclusion acts. Obvious outcome of such acts was religious conflicts among different believers. Foreseeing future conflicts, most religious authorities talked about peace and ways to achieve it. Those religious lessons are still valid for present day conflicts of all types. The above ideas have been elaborated in this book. Part 1 of this book is on “Religion: Origin and Emergence of New Doctrines”. The primary concern of everyone is: what religion is and when it was originated? The Part 1 of this book searches answer from prehistoric time to the present day. The discussion started with the meaning of religion and the earliest concepts about it. Then it has been clarified why new religions began to emerge after earliest religions. Part 1 has been concluded with a discussion on the present domain of religion and its scope. Part 2 of this book addresses the issue: is peace achievable? The discussion is on the basis of some ancient and contemporary ideas. Peace is a word that is used in different context in different ways. Idealistically, peace could be achieved if one can overcome desires and become absorbed in the self-realisation. In the materialistic world, however, we think that peace could be achieved by desire-ridden actions. These actions generally lead to conflict within a relationship and may have many consequences for all persons involved. So, how could we overcome these adverse situations and how peace could be achieved? To find an answer the present discussion revisits some ancient thoughts on root causes of conflict based on the idea of self, ego and concern for humanity. Finally, it has been investigated how far these abstract ideas are reflected in the modern theories of conflict resolution.
