This technologically advanced race has discovered "Vril", a powerful source of energy —the energy of the universe— capable of destroying entire cities with a single impact, or of healing the body and extending life.Written in 1870, Bulwer describes with great accuracy cities with electric lightning (powered by vril) and large machinery operated by robots; rooms with ambient music; personal air transport, and even libraries stored on metal plates (computer disks). The impact of this novel at the time was profound, but 150 years later we continue to question: Was Lytton able to see the future somehow, since his technological descriptions are so accurate?
