This book is a familiar object among other familiar objects. But it is only when that familiarity is disrupted that we can begin to ask searching questions about the narrative of our lives. The lives of Nietzsche and Kierkegaard were disrupted by their personal struggles. But the unexpected can happen in unexpected ways. Benign and familiar objects can often produce the unexpected. Our own awareness is intimately familiar, yet it is also uncanny and mysterious. We domesticate it by calling it mind or consciousness, thereby laying it open to investigation and understanding. But understanding doesn’t always produce purpose or value, leading us into questions about the relation between consciousness and value.
