Synopsis

The coral reefs of the Florida Keys provide diverse housing for thousands of species of sea life. The reefs also protect coastlines from storms. Waves slamming the coral reefs create great rides for surfers are another function of them. The continental ocean shelf drop-off out to the coral reef is a long distance to the north of Florida, compared to the south of there. Because of this, storms produce stronger wave action from it in the south, than in the north.Joshua Hempstead wondered how he nearly ended homeless soon after he first arrived in Florida. He could care less about the undersea world, the coral reefs or the continental ocean shelf when he first came there. He came there with his longtime girlfriend during college spring break many years ago. He lost her there and could not return home to his family's ranch near Nickel Lake, Colorado. Then he felt stuck in Florida. Then a young became his best friend of three hours. He taught him to surf just before death in a motorcycle wreck. Once he took up surfing, the undersea world meant something to him. He still felt stuck in Florida. However, he at least tried to make the best of the surfer’s life.
