The book starts from the unhappy fact that the 2018 angling catch was the lowest on record. Salmon anglers were abandoning their rivers with disastrous effects for the economy of many parts for rural Scotland. This resulted in a debate in the Scottish Parliament and a raised profile of the problems affecting the salmon in a changing world. Jamieson, examines the numerous changes for the salmon and its environment which may have brought this about with particular emphasis on the impact of a changing climate. In an authoritative, but readable, style he traces the changes which are affecting the salmon ‘lost at sea’ and its problems getting from its nursery streams to the sea in the first place. He examines the changes affecting the salmon rivers - their increasing volatility and extreme events - and the effects on salmon angling. In a complex and changing world he pleads for more ‘joined-up’ thinking and action to focus on the salmon’s problems and speculates on the future of Scotland’s iconic king of fish.

Mint paperback. "Salmon numbers across the Northern Hemisphere, both in the Atlantic and the Pacific are now very low. In Scotland the angling catch in 2018 was the lowest since records began in 1952. What are the causes of this serious state of play and what is the future for Scotland's salmon? . As a geographer, I am interested in how the freshwater environment - the rivers, headwaters and the watersheds of the uplands - can help the salmon to thrive - especially in a future which is forecast to be dominated by a changing climate." Chapters include: Introduction; Salmon in a changing climate (2007); Born to survive; Where the wild salmon run; A protected species; Salmon come to parliament; Salmon in crisis?; High level pressures; Lost at sea; Looking after the juveniles; Running the gauntlet; Homing; The power houses; Salmon in a joined-up world; A surviving species?; Selected references. .
