Synopsis

The book is about the villages situated near the foothills of the ancient Aravali hills near Kotputli, a town situated between the capital city New Delhi and the “pink city”, Jaipur. Historically Kotputli was part of ancient Matsya Pradesh. It is believed that a nearby town, Bairath (ancient name Viratnagar), was the capital of the Matsya Kingdom where the Pandava’s, of the epic Mahabharata, lived in hiding for a year. In the last three decades a lot of infrastructure development has been happening around this town. A major super highway has been constructed connecting Delhi-Jaipur-Mumbai. New industries have sprung up along this highway including cement factories, tire burning kilns, illegal mining of hills, encroachment of river beds, breweries, and other factories on the productive agricultural land. As a consequence, mining mafia, land mafia, crimes, robberies, overloaded truck traffic from mines and cement factories has created a miserable life for the common (wo) man. Mining blasts in the Aravalis’ near homes, schools and primary health care centers in the villages has created noise pollution, silica dust, leading to health problems for the rural population. Cases of silicosis, asthma, cancer and cardiovascular disease are killing people in the nearby villages. Villages situated in the Aravali hills used to have clean air, sufficient water for people and wildlife, tranquility and a peaceful life. Not only has the water table gone down from 4-5 meters to over 120 meters in the last quarter century but the hills, the native plants and wildlife are gradually disappearing in the name of development. “Tears of Development” is a swipe of what has been lost from villages and beautiful Aravali Hills as a consequence progress that has taken place in the last six decades.
