The Reverend William Staveley is the vicar of a small rural parish in Lincolnshire. He is single and handsome and has strong feelings of affection for his old friend, James Appleby, the local Bank Manager and church treasurer. James is in love with a pushy but alluringly attractive divorcee, Gloria Prendergast, a recent arrival in the parish. Gloria, however, has plans to marry William if she can find a way to ensnare him. Tired of intrigue and wanting to trace the genealogy of his family, William takes a sabbatical in Salt Lake City. During his travels in Utah he saves a group of women and their children from a flash flood but suffers a head injury in the attempt. He is rendered unconscious but awakens to find that he has been kidnapped by the women and taken to their commune in the desert scrub, miles from any other towns or dwellings. The women have christened him Noah and tell him that he is now their husband and the father of their remaining children. Eventually he escapes back to Salt Lake City with the help of the Elders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and makes his way back to England. There have been developments in the parish during his absence and things come to a head when an argument ensues. One of the principal characters is murdered brutally and another is accused of the crime. The unexpected ending comes as a surprise to the person from the original love triangle who remains both alive and at liberty.
