Synopsis

Franco, a physician, decided to kill himself by jumping off the cliff of the Rio Grande Gorge in Taos, New Mexico. Elmer, an old man with the same suicidal goal, started talking to him. Other visitors and workers came around to hear the story and relieve his suffering. Franco realizes that the system needs to be fixed and are given a new reason to live: to stop other people from suffering as they have. They realize that they are pitying themselves so much that they have forgotten to care about others' suffering. This book can be a call for unity and action instead of a request for pity and sadness. Human kindness and love are, in the end, the winner.Standing on the edge of an 800 feet gorge, Franco, a physician, wants to kill himself, after a very heart taking large law suite he just won. As he tried to go through his plan, he finds many people coming to the Gorge the same morning to attempt suicide. They are all from different areas and social backgrounds, but they have something in common: all of them were suffering. They become curious or relieved when they see that they are not alone in their suffering. This unknown crowd explores Franco's problems; they commiserate, bond, and become friends; they develop as people. They talk about how the flaws in the healthcare system caused these problems. This book describes the healthcare system flawed, which affected a physician’s life. The book offers a selfless overtone where, in the end, people reunited around the characters, pure strangers, are trying to help him just by listening to his story. Elmer has a wrongdoing story to tell, as well. In the end, the human kindness and the crowd warm fulfill Franco who decided not to kill himself. Other people are suffering as well and might eventually become depressed or suicidal. It would be selfish to run away from the problem through suicide instead of fixing it so that it doesn't stand and affect other people.
