Prudence Whipplewhite is a very practical young lady growing up in 1976. Her “forever friend” Miranda uses a wheelchair and with the advent of IDEA (The Individuals with Disabilities Act), Miranda will be transferring to Prudence’s school in the fall. Prudence decides that to pave the way for her friend she will introduce Miranda to her neighbor, Bobbie. Conflict arises when Bobbie is unsure about how to be a friend to someone that uses a wheelchair. Prudence realizes that this is not going to be as simple as introducing her friends; she must become the “teacher” and educate others about wheelchairs and the people that use them.
