Following his unexpected release from Allied imprisonment, former Nazi Colonel Manfred von Heine and his wife Anna try to forge a new, more serene life for themselves and their daughter in the still-uncertain atmosphere of his home village. Even in 1951, post-war sentiments run strongly among the townsfolk and the von Heines must navigate their way through prejudices, mistrust and--above all else--expectations that he will prove instrumental in furthering varying and diverse causes. Torn at times between past loyalties and present demands, von Heine risks all to do what he now believes is right for his family, his country and himself.
