Synopsis

This is the story of Andrew MacLaren a young Highlander in 17th century Scotland, who one day returns home to find his wife raped and badly beaten by Seamus MacIntosh leader of a band of caterans. Fearing their return, Andrew snatches up his infant son and leaving his dying wife hurries to his in-laws in the town of Laidon near Loch Earn. For this act of cowardice he is ostracised by his clan and following his wife’s subsequent death is forced to leave his son and home. Now alone, Andrew travels north and finally finds a new home in Kintail where he meets Kirsty Mackenzie but loses her to another. He also finds an enemy in the chief’s son Coll MacKerlich who discovers Andrew’s past. One day on his way back home from the Kyles by chance Andrew meets and slays his wife’s killer, and badly wounded himself is taken to the cateran stronghold, where under the care of Una a young orphan lass he is nursed back to health. Upon his return home it is to find that the old chief has died and that Coll his son is now chief and has given his croft to another. Now homeless Andrew returns to the caterans where, through his penchant for organising ‘liftings’ (the stealing of cattle) he becomes their leader. During his time as leader, Andrew is approached by Kenneth MacSorley of Quoich who proposes that Andrew ‘lift’ cattle from the Grants of Glen Moriston so that he can appear to come to their rescue and in so doing gain the favour of the lovely Isobella Grant head of that small clan. This Andrew does only to find that he himself is to be caught in the trap. For this act of treachery Andrew finds Quoich and mutilates him . So begins a personal vendetta by Quoich to capture Andrew which over the years he finally does but not in the way he had envisaged. During his life known as ‘The Cateran’ Andrew wins the affection of Isobella Grant whose ambition is to ween him off the life of a robber and introduce him to high society with disastrous result for Andrew as the lady all along has had her own agenda. The story also tells of Andrew’s friendship with the ‘Troich’ (A dwarf) whose uncanny instincts save Andrew on many an occasion. His falling out with his right hand men Duncan Cameron and Jonny MacKellar, the latter who had led the caterans after the death of Seamus MacIntosh. His love for Una now full grown, who with others die from starvation due to the treachery of Hamilton and McMahon who are part of the cateran band. His betrayal of the Troich and its final conclusion.
