It has taken more than a decade to create the European Internal Market. For the participating countries, millions of customs documents have become obsolete. Hundreds of different national rules have been replaced by common ones. It was one of the most extensive campaigns against red tape in recent decades. In this book, I try to show how many discussions were necessary in the most diverse areas to create a Europe of open borders. From this experience, we can draw conclusions regarding the political energy and the time that will be needed for one of the Member States to backtrack from the internal market. In the current situation of the forthcoming Brexit it is necessary to work out a coherent strategy for the future of the European Union. I believe that we must turn Europe from head to toe.
