A bunch of evil humans walled off from our local star systems "beyond the Veil" figure out how to return and conquer the planet Albion. Commodore Thomas Gage takes the remains of Albion's space fleet into exile, seeking allies against the invaders. Some may consider these books fast-paced or "action-packed," but the author's inability to create characters as well-rounded and sympathetic as David Weber's Honor Harrington and company presumably earned rejections from any major houses he tried. For one thing, these paperbacks appear to be set in 11 pt. type, but where 11 is usually ledded 13 or 14 (allowing minimal space between lines of type), here the ledding is about 24. (Imagine pages typed out on an old-fashioned typewriter with the carriage return set to "double space.") This huge spacing between lines of type allows only about 135 words per page, which means these books of about 390 pages count only about 52,500 words, each. Compare this to Weber's work for Baen: using smaller type and tighter ledding, the trade paperback of "Flag in Exile" fits 310 words per page, so that 443-page book holds 138,000 words -- more than twice the actual content of "Point of Honor." Whereas Weber's later, hardcover releases, like "In Enemy Hands," fit 320 words to a page, meaning the 530 pages of "In Enemy Hands" give that novel a word count of 170,600 -- more than three times the actual content of these hasty exercises. Yes, the eye adjusts quickly to these spaced-out pages. But there are hardly any PERSONALITIES in these missile battles. Why not use that wasted paper to give us a more complex, nuanced, involving piece of fiction? Fox does better in collaboration with Weber; see "Governor" and "Rebel."
