Synopsis

Father Hartman had been struggling through midcareer doldrums for some time. It showed most in the confessional where he is grimly impatient and darkly humorous. Bad as his life was, it changed drastically for the worst when the young priest in the confessional across the church from him was killed. In a series of missteps driven by good intensions, Hartman finds himself step by step further away from his life as a functioning priest. Through his relentless pursuit of the threads that lead to and from the horrible murder, Hartman regains his self-esteem and the respect of those around him. The core events that form the narrative presage the horrible attacks on children that have become all too familiar to us in the last few decades.
