Synopsis

The 1950s is regarded by many as a golden age. Britain was beginning to recover from the Second World War; money was being invested in rebuilding towns and cities; there were jobs aplenty. It was an especially exciting time for the younger generation who, for the first time, began to break free from the image of themselves as mini versions of their parents, in order to discover their own identity and create their own culture. Intrinsic to this were the cinemas, dance halls, coffee parlours and recording artists they embraced, even ‘up north’ where things always take a little longer to reach! 1950s West Yorkshire is the context for Mavis’ story where, in 1951, she was a 17-year-old girl ready for a fresh start in a new job. She takes us through the decade in which she grew up, through both happy times and personal struggles, from going out dancing for the first time, learning about politics, and trying to decide – out of all the things on offer – what life is really all about.
