Synopsis

Photographs tell stories. If you look close enough, you can gaze into a bland photo at the bottom of a stack and see poverty, power, hope and tradition. You can see modernization, history and productivity and feel the emotion in the faces of each character. You can recognize the art in the lives of those behind the camera, too, those who captured each unique and intentional vision. Join Sally as she listens and interprets the voices behind the images taken by three influential women in her life —Jewell, Ione and Deborah. Photographs dating back to the 1930’s, 1950’s and through to present day capture stories of what was important to these women who were bound by kinship and the desire to own land. The purpose of writing this book was to study the photographs in an attempt to retell the story of one family. The photographs became the voices and dictated the structure of the story. While studying the lives of these women, Sally chose not to impose present standards on their work, but to interpret the stories the women chose to tell. These impassioned women used the camera as a tool to explore their world. In the process, the reader sees what was important to them and how they changed. Most importantly, this book is a keepsake that leaves a legacy of three women. What about your family stories? Are they waiting to be told? If you have photos lying neglected at the bottom of your overstuffed drawers, or crated away in boxes, dig them out and begin your discovery and interpretation today. Grab a copy of this book to inspire you and to find a way to help you discover your ancestors’ lives, too. ---------------- Sally Busby is a teacher, an artist and holds a Master of Arts degree in Southern Studies from the University of Mississippi. The interpretation of these photos was subtly influenced by Carol Stack, Hortense Powdermaker, and documentary photography approaches.
