Synopsis

Gemstones are typically identified by visual examinations and, on occasion, destructive processes. Here, a novel approach to identifying semiprecious gemstones is presented. Based on distinct natural harmonic frequencies, unique vibrational signatures are extracted from various gemstones, revealing a new and non-destructive method for identification. This innovative method of identifying specific vibrational signatures may have additional or broader applications in other scientific fields as well.

Baxton Chen was the 2016 winner of the Foundation for the Advancement of Anthropology and History Scholarship Award. He previously developed a method of identifying pottery shards, allowing for a new method to classify archaeological finds.
