From emerging writer Hemed Mohamed comes Pookie: A Short Story Collection. This book is chock-full of bite-sized stories that span a wide range of topics. Each story’s delicious blend of humor and insight keeps the pages turning, and turning, and turning. In this collection, several things happen. A man with fading eyesight takes in a new friend off the streets. The pressures of studying for the SAT’s results in an unlikely connection between a city teenager and a woman from the country. Shenanigans ensue when dogs hump carelessly. One digital assistant says screw it, and goes off on a vacation. It’s an eventful flight when a pilot finds out his ex-wife is onboard and wants to talk (uh-oh.) When a new guy moves into town, one man is pretty sure the newcomer is a drug dealer. After an old couple fights with their children, they explore what it means to be self-reliant and responsible at the same time. A young couple is ready to move in together, or are they? One night of baby-sitting goes to complete shit. Awkward relationships remind us to keep our devices locked. A woman swears she has it all, but then again, maybe she doesn’t. Netflix just might bring two ex’s back together. A woman becomes a mommy well before she’d ready. And last, but certainly not least, is the story Pookie. The title track tells the story of a man whose girlfriend’s cat has gone missing—and he couldn’t care less. These characters and situations are as entertaining as they are short, and as thoughtful as they are funny.
